But where Sonic Youth had a NYC arty vibe, Sullen embrace their Midwestern roots with a rustbelt grit devoid of pretension. Where punk meets rock, the combination of consonant guitars, pop hooks, power chords, and a stadium aesthetic, make 'Paint The Moon' a pronounced debut. Tense harmonies, a loud/quiet dynamic and slow burn intensity sharpen the jagged edge of singer Shanna Kiels tongue. Recorded by Andy Gerber (Local H, Caviar) in Chicago, the band managed to capture their full throttle live approach (2 guitars played through both guitar and bass amps with huge thumping drums). The result is sexy and stirring, layered and lavish, incendiary and subversive. THICK welcomes Sullen to our completely dysfunctional family.
