Something impersonal...
For some it is defeat, for others it is victory.
The acacia is broken, the maple is blown up on a mine,
What were waiting for spring at the broken house
And the barking of a dog on chains at the booth,
And her squealing, subsided under the explosion of a terrible roar.

What does war smell like?
Glory or shame?
Tears of a widow. headless roof
Empty eye sockets of broken windows
And a bunch of shards of scattered glass.
Through the eyes of a child looking up at the sky
Ash-blotched wind.

What does war smell like?
Parting with friends
And a viscous pause - a plea, an expectation,
Hope for news - even two words:
"I'm ALIVE ... I'm ALIVE ..." - May God bless you, dear ones!
Embroidered cards with red strokes,
About "before" and "after" the divided world.

Crazy darkness.
Explosions of bright black shells.
The land plowed up not for the harvest,
What does war smell like? - I now understand:
And blood, and sweat, and fiery smoke,
And a long road to the desired world.
